Our Mission
Our mission is to inspire students as future leaders in maritime engineering and environmental sciences; provide a dynamic teaching laboratory for educators through innovative education, hands-on experiences; and collaborate around research to build and share knowledge of transformative practices.
The Maritime Engineering and Environmental Studies Academy (MEESA) is a partnership between Old Dominion University and Newport News Public Schools. Based at the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab, MEESA focuses on maritime and environmental studies, emphasizing experiential learning and community partnerships. The academy aims for academic excellence, innovation, and preparing students to meet the growing demands of the Maritime industry. We do this by: Experiential Learning, Interdisciplinary Excellence, Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship, Technology Proficiency, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving. Central to our endeavors is the integration of the education system with workforce development, enhancing pathways to careers within the maritime industry and the environmental science sector.
